Pre-Authorizations (Payment Services Integration)
A credit card pre-authorization is much like any other charge to a credit card, except instead of actually debiting funds from the cardholder you just put a temporary "hold" on the funds that lasts for a particular number of days. The nature of transaction processing within some businesses could regularly exceed the time constraints for credit card pre-authorizations. Once the pre-authorization time limit has passed, the transaction cannot be captured for payment collection.
In order to help you avoid this situation, each payment service provider has an option to disallow the used of pre-authorizations within the backoffice environment.
Note: Pre-authorizations are a requirement for portal features, so the pre-authorization option will be ignored by portal-based payment processing.
On the provider's Payment Service Integration screen:
- If the Disallow Pre-Authorizations check box is marked, and you are entering an external payment for a 'New', 'Verified', 'Shipped', or 'Invoiced' sales order, the Charge Type field is set to 'Sale' and field is disabled.
- If the Disallow Pre-Authorizations check box is clear, and you are entering an external payment:
- If the sales order type is 'New', the Charge Type field is set to 'Pre-Authorization', and you can change the charge type.
- If the sales order type is 'Verified', 'Shipped', or 'Invoiced', the Charge Type field is set to 'Pre-Authorization' and the field is disabled.
